Vehicle statistics:
The Engine is of US origin & has Casting No D2AE-CA 2G24 with Batch Clock noted “8”; which means it was cast 24th July 1972 and was in the 8th Batch of block castings for that Work Shift, it was machined 25th July 1972 (shift hr “3” or C), Assembled 26th July 1972 (shift hr “J” or 9), it has a 4MAB crankshaft, solid lifter camshaft with adjustable rocker gear (now roller rockers), big port 4V quench (closed) chamber heads, Factory 780 Holley and Factory H & M Phase IV extractors. The Tachometer is the 7000 RPM type but is Red Lined at 6200 RPM instead of the usual 5400 Red Line used with Hydraulic camshaft engines. This engine was probably in the last batch of manual trans engines imported from the USA in about September 1972 and both the Engine Tag and left rocker cover bear code CK617J1W.
The “Vehicle History Extract Report” shows the SIDO, Prefix & Serial Numbers were actually allocated on the 20th April 1973 but it did not go on the Production Line until 1st August 1973 and was not completed until 17th August which is an unusually long period; in fact this is a similar period of time to the 3 Phase IV Prototypes which took 16, 19 & 19 days & the sole GTHO 16 days. Most vehicles only took 2 to 3 days start to finish and the addition of a Factory Sun Roof usually added another 2 or 3 days, perusal of reports for other GT Specials revealed the usual time frame to be about 6 days which only leaves one plausible explanation as to why this particular vehicle took so long and that can only be attributed to 4 wheel disc brakes which were in very short supply in August 1973 & needed for Landau/LTD Production. This explains why they were only fitted to a few vehicles instead of the full 250 GT Specials produced. This vehicle was eventually assigned to Retail Dealer No 2164 on 24th August 1973 and transported to Finney Ford Miranda NSW where it was sold to the original owner who kept it for approx 20 years.
