Scott's (P)ride
Scott's HT Brougham is the closest he could come to experiencing a V8 Monaro.
Scott tells us, "I had always loved the shape and style of the HK, T, G Holdens ever since my Grandfather owned a HG Belmont many years ago. After coming to the realization that funds would not allow me to purchase a Monaro of any engine specification, I looked to the V8 Premiers for answers.
Again, funds were an issue as it seemed everyone alse had the same idea. By chance I found my Brougham listed on Ebay in Wagga Wagga. This Brougham was the 15th HT Brougham made and as such had one of the earliest 308s produced fitted. It even still had a powerglide fitted, confirming it to being an early production.
I traveled from Sydney to inspect her before bidding and found her to be pretty sad. She had spent all her life in the Riverina area and as such was full of red dust, absolutely everywhere. There was even a fair colony of red back spiders that I would later find out. After a small bidding war, I purchased her unregistered and had her carried to Sydney where I immediately started cleaning her up.
Although running, things were all original so they were pretty tired and dangerous. I concentrated on the driveline and suspension etc for reliability and safety resulting in me having repaired brakes and lines, front and rear bushes, radiator, reco powerglide, dual exhaust (previous single exhaust on there was from a 6!) reco Rochester, new speedo cable, new carpet and the big one just completed, reco engine. After some ringing around I found that I had a “HP” block fitted as per the factory for the Broughams and that I would be a fool to exchange it.
After some teething problems she is getting there and makes a great cruiser and gets a lot of comments. She is guaranteed to get an elderly gentleman to say, “Hey love, it’s a Brougham. Gee I haven’t seen one of them around for years!” With prices of Australian muscle cars traveling as they are now, this rare piece of Australian motoring will suit me just fine.
