While all the focus at Bathurst in 1970 was on the XW GTHO Falcons, a Cortina GT Mk 2 did in fact race that year entered by Kloster Ford of Newcastle, NSW. Racing in Class B against the legendary Datsun 1600 and Fiat 128 the little Cortina was outclassed on the track but not on the road. A terrific marketing package designed for the young at heart, the MK 2 Cortina GT was a capable family car with enough get up and go and style to attract the younger buyer.
The second-generation Mark 2 Cortina features a 'Cross-Flow' version of the Kent 1600cc engine using new manifolds, a dual barrel Weber downdraught carburettor developing 93 bhp at 5400 rpm. Radial tyres and 5-inch wheels became standard equipment and a new centre console with GT badge was fitted. Ford produced the Mark 2 GT locally in limited numbers, building 1,449 in total. The few survivors are becoming increasingly collectible.
For sale is a totally original Vermilion Fire and black trim Mk 2 Cortina GT. One of only 25 made in Vermilion Fire, the car was dry stored for 31 years by a mechanic who purchased the car from one of his customers. The current owner saw the car in the workshop when he was 23 and eventually bought the car. Under his ownership the car has been completely mechanically restored and it runs and drives perfectly.
The car features mostly original Vermilion paint and all original black interior. There is some rust in the body but no serious structural rust. The interior is day one, simple, stylish and everything works as it should. Open the boot and the original boot mat is still in place as is the spare and the original tools.
This Cortina GT is a true survivor. Perfect to drive as is or restore to showroom condition. Either way, this Vermilion fire GT is sure to put a smile on your dial.
Comes with a Ford verification letter noting one of 25 built in Vermilion fire and one of 3 with this exact build.
