Based on the humble Belmont variant of the HQ series, the SS was a toe in the water for GMH at building a budget muscle car for the masses. And they were blown away with the public's response. At $3,500 on the road, the orders poured into the dealerships with the initial planned run of 1500 cars woefully inadequate forcing GMH to build a further 1300 HQ SSs.
If you could get one, you had a choice of three colours; Infra Red, Ultra Violet and Lettuce Alone. All three were unique to this first model SS.
Aside from the riotous colours and SS badging, the package was surprisingly humble. It had the 253 cube V-eight, backed up by an M20 four-speed gearbox and 3.36 Monaro Salisbury diff. Power was claimed at 185 horses, with 0-60mph coming up in around 10 seconds and the quarter mile in around 17.5 seconds.
Inside you got bucket seats and the full Monaro dash, plus a distinctive wheel, but beyond that it was surprisingly sparse.
After-all it was a budget muscle car - so no interior light, arm rests or cigarette lighter.
The distinctive hounds-tooth seat trim was fitted to all the first-run cars, but the material ran out. Second-run examples often have a small chequer pattern or full black vinyl seat covers.
For sale is this magnificent SS example in Infra Red. It has been fully restored and presents in unblemished excellent condition with a repaint in approximately 2015 and a retrim in the original houndstooth trim. The SS is running a period correct 253 cui V8 but remains original in all other respects. The car has been fitted with period correct power steering and a genuine super hard to find A/C dash. The SS is fitted with a working AM radio.
The car was originally sold through Gersbach's Garage in Wellington, NSW and is showing an indicated 107,418 miles. It comes with all compliance plates in place, a Holden Historical Services letter of authenticity and receipts for work including a recent gear box rebuild, clutch replacement, flywheel machining and a brake and suspension rebuild.
Now getting pretty thin on the ground, these SS Holdens are certainly popular amongst collectors and this example is one of the only 300 known survivors and appears on the HQ SS Holden database. Located in Western Suburbs of Melbourne, VIC car. On Club registration. (AMCS Ref: 5700)
