1976 Chevrolet Impala Clamshell Wagon

If National Lampoon's Vacation is your movie trip, then this could be your new set of wheels. 1976 Chevrolet Impala Clamshell Wagon imported to Australia by GMH as a demo model and converted locally. This is huge - 6 metres long and weighs in at 3 tons. The unique 'clamshell' tailgate design allowed the rear power-operated glass to slide up into the roof as the tailgate (manually or with power assist), dropped below the load floor. The power tailgate, the first of its kind, ultimately supplanted the manual tailgate which required marked effort to lift from storage. This design was shared with other full-sized GM wagons from Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick.
