Fast becoming the holy grail of Aussie Muscle Cars. the mighty HSV GTSR W1. A collectable classic from the get go. And now a seriously collectable motor car on the world stage. That's right! These cars are being keenly sought by US buyers as well as collectors here in Australia and New Zealand.
It's hard to believe that what started off in 1978 as humble family transport has come to this. Congratulations has to go to HSV for building the HSV GTS R W1 - a true world class vehicle.
Only 298 of these ultra special Commodores were built, 275 for Australia and 23 for NZ. And to these, the last of the glorious Aussie Commodores, HSV fitted the monstrous ZR1 Corvette derived LS9 6.2 litre supercharged V8 pumping out 474kW or 636hp and 815Nm of torque.
But it was not all about the power. HSV engineers also blessed the GTSR W1 with some pretty serious performance kit. Like a dry sump that prevents oil starvation at race track speeds. And custom-tuned suspension. Plus unique to the W1 the Tremec TR6060 MH3 close ratio six-speed manual transmission and a ZF Sachs twin-plate clutch that's lighter and more compact than the GTS. Pirelli's PZero Trofeo R tyres (including a warning label not to use them in wet conditions).
The suspension spec is unique W1 material. The SupaShock setup reduces body roll and in turn allows the inside tyre to maintain a greater contact load with the road, which results in higher mid-corner friction across the front axle and reduces the tendency for understeer. While the fixed rate dampers are firm on the road, they are perfect for a track setup, with the car remaining virtually dead flat.
FOR SALE is HSV's very own PILOT TEST W1 - Build E004, one of only 4 Pilot-Mules used by HSV for powertrain evaluation by HSV engineers. This car started life as a GTS and was fitted with the W1 484 kW engine for testing purposes. That's the reason it doesn't have the standard W1 interior or the Supershock suspension. However, it does have all the other standard W1 kit and in fact it has been allocated a December build date as per the HSV compliance plate making it one of the last W1's to be built and offered for sale. (see HSV build letter below)
In pristine condition, this extremely rare pilot car was used for developing Australia's most powerful production car ever built. It's basically 1 of 4 of the rarest W1's ever built. This is the car featured in the press articles, videos and in the camouflaged wrap at Phillip Island during the W1 launch Day.
And best of all, it has travelled 28,548 kilometres during its life at HSV so you won't feel guilty driving it yourself unlike most of the other W1's sold.
Complete with a full service history this W1 is ready to be registered and driven or simply showcased in any HSV or muscle car collection.
