1972 Holden HQ SS ... (SOLD)

The Holden HQ SS was released by GM-H in August, 1972, as a tester for expanding the Monaro nameplate onto a four-door platform. Based on the Belmont sedan, the SS took that basic, entry-level spec and added a 253 V8 engine, dual exhaust, M20 four-speed manual transmission with floor shifter, a 3.36:1 diff ratio, sports-tuned suspension, power front disc brakes, styled steel wheels, radial tyres, bucket front seats in vinyl with Houndstooth cloth inserts (later Raydo cloth), a GTS steering wheel, GTS instrumentation and full carpeting.

Only three exterior colours were offered – Lettuce Alone, Infra Red and Ultra Violet – with black stripes and SS decals on the GTS vented front guards and boot lid, regardless of paint choice. Inside you got bucket seats and the full Monaro dash, plus a distinctive wheel, but beyond that it was surprisingly sparse.

As a marketing exercise, the SS was a huge success, with a sell out of the first production run of 1,600 vehicles (allegedly one for every Holden dealer and multiple units for larger dealers) leading to a second run of around 1,200 being built at the end of 1972.

For sale is a two owner unrestored Infra Red HQ SS purchased from the original lady owner in 2016. Since purchasing the HQ SS, the current owner has re-timmed the seats while the door cards and dashtop have been left original. Mechanically the car has been fully serviced and the fuel pump, water pump and brakes have been overhauled. Otherwise the HQ SS is in original condition throughout with all original Infra Red paint from the factory in fair condition with minimal rust in the bottom of the doors while the sills, quarters and guards are all rust free. The paint is thin in places and has lifted in some places due to having been covered while being stored.

The car has covered a genuine 57,880 kilometres from new and comes with an owners manual and letter of authenticity from Holden. Supplied with the original VIC number plates LKC 722, the original boot mat, spare and tools.

Located Mornington Peninsula, VIC for your inspection.
