1973 Mustang Mach 1 ... (SOLD)

For sale the last of the original Mach 1 Mustangs. Now available for inspection in Shepparton, Victoria.

It’s easy to see why Ford added the Mach 1 to its Mustang line-up in 1969. After all, the Space and Jet Ages were in full swing and breaking the sound barrier was not only still a relatively new thing, but had captured the public’s imagination ever since Chuck Yeager became the first person to exceed Mach 1, piloting his Bell XS-1 jet plane to a speed of 1299km/h, or Mach 1.06.

Originally designed to sit between the regular Mustang GT and the Shelby GT350 in the Mustang line-up, the 1973 version of the Mach 1 came equipped with an entry-level 302 cubic inch (4.9-litre) V8, or a choice of either two-barrel or four-barrel 351 cubic inch (5.8-litre) Clevelands and a choice of either a three-speed manual, three-speed auto or an optional four-speed manual. Ford also beefed up the suspension for sportier handling.

Externally, the Mach 1, available only as a fastback, was distinguished by race-spec bonnet pins, NACA bonnet scoops, Mach 1 decals on the side, a chromed fuel cap, Magnum wheels shod on Goodyear rubber, and chromed exhaust tips, all standard. Options included a rear spoiler and louvred rears windows.

Inside, the Mach 1 remained pretty standard, although some teak wood trims helped set it apart from regular ’Stangs.

Imported to Australia in the late 1970s and converted by V.E.M in Cheltenham, Vic to right hand drive, this last of the original Mach 1 Mustangs is presented in stunning Jade Green with Gold stripes. The car was restored 20 years ago and is still in excellent condition with no dents, scratches or rust.

The interior features new white seat covers, original dash, steering wheel and working gauges except for the clock. The Mach 1 is fitted with working integrated Sanden Vintage Air conditioning and an aftermarket radio/CD player.

Running the 351 Cleveland 2V rebuilt around 20,000 miles ago, bored 20 thou with new pistons, rings, valves and bearings. Fitted with extractors, Holley 600cfm vac sec with mild cam, this 351 runs like a dream and uses no oil. Transmission is a FMX automatic rebuilt 1,400 miles ago and then through to a rebuilt 9" diff.

Suspension has been rebushed with new Koni shocks and new springs. The Mach 1 has 4 wheel disc brakes (EF Ford on the rear) and power Rack and Pinion steering. The whole cooling system has been rebuilt from the radiator through to thermostat, sender and hoses.

Riding on 15" Magnum wheels with near new Yokohama C-Drive tyres. The boot features the space saver wheel and jack/brace.
