1964 EH Holden Special ... (SOLD)

Now for sale this '64 EH Special in Tartan Turquoise, located in Mackay Qld.

The EH was and still is an iconic Aussie classic. With 270,000 built it was also super popular. In their day, the big news over the previous EJ was the new powerplant. The legendary red-series engine, the product of a new plant at Fisherman’s Bend (Vic) replaced the old grey motor specifically to up the ante in the horsepower wars against Ford's Falcon and Chrysler's Valiant.

The new seven-bearing pushrod unit (with hydraulic lifters) came in three variants: 149ci low-compression rated at 95hp, a standard 149 at 100hp and the 179 claiming 115 horses. Far more powerful than the four-bearing grey motor, it also claimed better fuel economy. It of course was eventually punched out to form the much-loved 202.

The 179 was offered with the auto Hydra-Matic trans and with an upgraded three-speed manual transmission. GMH claimed 14 models across sedans, station wagons, utilities and panel vans. This was the first time a Premier badge was attached to a wagon and you could say niche marketing had truly arrived at Holden.

According to motoring journalists, the EH was quick, beautifully trimmed and finished, tough in the Holden way, spacious and the height of 1960s elegance. And equipped with the 179 and manual transmission, 6 examples joined the pack at Bathurst for the Armstrong 500 in 1963, driven by Ralph Sach and Frank Morgan coming in second behind the Ford Cortina MkI GT driven by Bob Jane and Harry Firth. That was backed up with a second place in the 1964 touring car championships with Norm Beechey at the helm.

For sale is a nicely modded Tartan Turquoise 1964 EH Holden Special running a 179HP block with Yella Terra head, TQ20 cam, electronic ignition, a 350 Holley carby and extractors through to the original reconditioned 3 speed manual gearbox with reconditioned Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder. Riding on widened original rims, the EH features a LJ Torana disc brake front end with booster and has just been serviced including the a whole new braking system, steering box, radiator, hoses and belts, air cleaner and under bonnet wiring plus the fitment of a liner in the fuel tank.

The EH has been repainted in the original Tartan Turquoise with white roof and has been re-trimmed in factory Gem Tiera Turquoise trim which included rebolstering of the seats and fitment of new seat belts front and rear. On the inside there is new hood lining, a one piece floor mat with Holden emblem, full rubber kit, parcel shelf, kick boards and wiring.

On the outside in addition to new paint, the owner has splashed out on reconditioned bumpers front and rear, new headlights, door handles, mirrors, locks and ignition barrel. The gauges on the dash are an optional extra as seen in the S2 version featuring Smith brand oil, temp, vacuum and amp gauges.

Riding on new tyres, the EH has also benefited from new wheel bearings and diff seals.

In addition the EH has been fully rust proofed so it is ready to roar for another 57 years!
