1972 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 455 HO - Cameo White

Knockout condition 1972 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 455 HO in spectacular Cameo White for sale from our Sydney Showroom.

Pontiac’s Firebirds were a prime example of the “no replacement for displacement” mantra. While most other manufacturers were simply lowering compression and taming camshafts in response to pending emissions regulations, Pontiac went back to the drawing board to create a low-compression engine that really wasn't a compromise.

Using bits from some of its hottest engines, engineers topped the biggest version of the V-8 with Ram-Air-style round-port cylinder heads, an aluminum intake manifold, a Ram Air III camshaft, and Ram Air-style high-flow exhaust manifolds. And this 455 HO engine was wrapped in one of the best looking Trans Am body packages that looked tough and fast just idling on your drive way.

And their numbers are limited. Due to the 174-day UAW strike at the Norwood Assembly Plant in 1972, Pontiac built just 1,286 Firebird Trans Ams equipped with the 455 HO motor.

FOR SALE is one of the best presented unrestored Trans Am we have ever seen. Repainted in the factory Cameo White over a rarely optioned Deluxe Trim in Medium Blue vinyl interior, this 455 HO was built at the Norwood, Ohio plant and delivered to a New York Pontiac dealer and sold with a sticker price of $4,256. Goodies include the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission, Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential, a shaker hood, power front disc brakes, quick-ratio power steering, a Trans Am steering wheel, Rally gauges, an engine-turned dash and a super rare D58 rear floor console option.

Pop the hood, and the 455 HO sports an open Shaker scoop, a deep-breathing Rochester Q-Jet atop an aluminum intake manifold, new for '72 7F6 oval-port heads and huge 111-cc chambers. Compression was dropped to 8.4:1 and this all contrived to deliver a conservative 300 horsepower and 415 Ft pound of torque. One motoring journalist at the time commented, "Stab the throttle, the nose stands up, the sounds of the earth crack open beneath you and demons of speed fly forth to speed your path toward an unending horizon. Second gear, and the rears chirp. Sixty miles an hour? Already gone. Good thing that the roads out here are arrow-straight and Nebraska-flat, or else we might scare oncoming traffic".

But loads of power is not all that the Trans Am has going for it. This Pontiac has the masculine good looks and perfect manners to go with the grunt. Even though this is now a 50 plus year old car, the Trans Am is a very nice piece of machinery to drive.

On the inside, this Trans Am is factory original with original vinyl seats, door cards, hood lining, dash, steering wheel, gauges, radio and clock. The carpet has been replaced. The mileage showing is 48,480 miles which is believed to be genuine and is supported with the documentation provided.

Imported to Australia in 2012 and Queensland Mod Plated in 2013, the car was a personal import. The current owner purchased the car in 2021.

A big block Trans Am like this one is what American Muscle cars are all about. Lots of power, super good looks and a nice drive. And this one delivers just that.
