Absolutely original 1974 HQ Sandman Panel Van now for sale, located in Deniliquin, NSW. Solid survivor Sandman Panelvan sold with full NSW registration.

The famous Holden HQ Sandman - the first dedicated dual purpose vehicle invented and built right here in good old OZ! - a 'Shaggin’ Wagon' on the weekends that could be put to work during the week.

The original Sandman Panel Van was launched with the HQ, which was built in very limited volume from January to September of 1974. All HQ Sandman vans were based on the entry level Belmont spec van. It seems that no more than 100 were produced, all equipped with the 253 cubic-inch V8.

Wheels magazine covered the new trend in a feature in August 1973 titled ‘Vans are the Thing’ with the sub-heading ‘Sports cars are out – high insurance premiums have killed the GTs’, in which it reported that demand for vans had risen 80 per cent in two years. In fact, while sales of the HJ Monaro GTS coupe averaged fewer than 30 a month nationally, just one Sydney dealership alone sold half that number of vans in the same period.

And their popularity has never waned. So if you missed out on the fun in the 70's here is your chance to have another go.

For sale is this ORIGINAL '74 Adelaide built HQ Sandman Panel Van. Factory Chrome Yellow with Black long grain vinyl interior. Numbers matching 253 V8 and 4 speed M20 manual transmission with 3.36 ratio Salisbury LSD diff.

The car was purchased by Andrews Wire Products P/L of Preston, Victoria from the Holden dealer Watsons of Greenborough, VIC on the 9th of July, 1974. The current owner purchased the Panelvan from Warwick, QLD where it had been stored on blocks for 25 years. The last registration sticker shows 1997 as the last year of full Queensland registration.

Mechanically, the current owner has been right through the engine with rebuilt 4BBL Rochester carby, reconditioned radiator and new hoses, new brake calipers and hoses with new shocks (originals supplied) and new engine mounts. The engine runs well and does not blow smoke or leak oil. The owner believes that the 94,316 Kilometers is genuine. The gearbox and diff are untouched and in perfect condition. The exhaust has been maintained with some new sections fitted.

The interior is all original except for new seat covers in the factory Black long grain vinyl with original door cards, carpets, perfect crash pad, steering wheel and working instruments. Even the cigarette lighter still works. The Sandman has never had a radio fitted.

All glass if factory date coded except for the front windscreen and rear tailgate window. The photos show that the side windows are date code correct for factory fitment.

Certainly one of the last UNRESTORED Survivor Sandman Panelvans left especially as it is supplied complete with the original log books and the matching numbers running gear.

The car is riding on 5 genuine factory GTS rims as per the Sandman build with brand new Nankang 215/65R14 tyres. The HQ is supplied with a spare wheel and tyre.

Full NSW registration until 20th September, 2023. Located in Deniliquin, NSW for inspection by appointment. (Ref. 6237)

And if you like we will gladly arrange a video inspection/road test of the car using WhatsApp and of course there is no issue with door to door freight delivery anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
