1986 VL HSV Walkinshaw Commodore Replica Convertible ... (SOLD)

Now for something totally different. A 1986 VL Commodore Berlina professionally converted to a Convertible, engineered and full NSW registered. Located in Bowral, NSW.

Engineered like no other VL Holden Commodore!

Purposely built and designed by a famous member of the Holden Precision Driving Team is this stunning 1 of a kind VL Convertible. It was the car that the Holden Precision driving team used to parade around the circuit after their shows and was built to resemble what a Holden Factory VL convertible would look like. This car was built as the prototype with the view to sell convertible VL’s. Unfortunately due to the cost of conversion and lack of marketing support the project never got off the ground.

Starting life as a 1986 Holden Commodore Berlina, the car was professionally converted to a Convertible at a not unsubstantial cost in 1986 of $30,000 so that it could be used as the parade car for the Bridgestone Precision Driving team. (Don’t panic - they did not drive this one on the 2 wheels!) and it was transported to special events by road transporter and hence the low Klms. Using the Opel Monza Coupe as the basis for engineering purposes, the builders of this car used chassis rails and other reinforcing to strengthen the chassis so that the body is very rigid. Opel Monza doors were used to replace the standard 4 Commodore items as was the Monza rear quarter panels to suit the two door configuration. The car is fully engineered and has been NSW registered since new.

In 1990, after the car had completed its tour with the Bridgestone Precision Driving Team, it was sold to the current owner with 46,000 Klms on the clock. While looking for a Mustang Convertible, the owner spied this unique Commodore and purchased it, using it as family transport. Then in 2001, the eldest son decided at the age of 25 to start a wedding hire business and owning a genuine VL Group A Walkinshaw Commodore modified the VL Convertible to match the genuine Walky. This included the fitment of a Walkinshaw spoiler kit, a complete 2 pack repaint in Panorama Silver, retrim of the interior to match the Tweed Grey Walkinshaw cloth trim and fitting of the HSV 16" Alloy rims.

The car runs the original matching numbers 3 Litre 6 cylinder engine and 4 speed Automatic and has covered a genuine 159,500 Kilometres from new. The engine features extractors and a sports exhaust and actually sounds pretty close to that wonderful V8 burble. The VL is also fitted with an electrically operated hood with new canvas covering and the top folds automatically into a custom space behind the back seat passengers and has a custom stowaway cover.

Recent servicing totaling $10,000 by it's fussy owner has been carried out to ensure everything works as it did back in 1986 so you can drive and enjoy. This includes new rubbers for windows and roof, servicing of fuel injectors, new air conditioning system, new front brakes and rear suspension bush kit fitted. It also has near new Bridgestone tyres. Mechanically the car has been well looked after, with regular servicing every 10,000 Klms. Receipts are included for this work.

As featured in Commodore Power magazine. This is a jump in and drive anywhere car. It will turn heads where-ever it goes and is in excellent condition throughout. And with full NSW registration until July, 2022 with its own Engineering certification number it is a great opportunity to own a piece of Aussie engineering brilliance and something that is certainly a one-of-a-kind!
